Hermann Restaurants - For what my opinion is worth
Hermann has a small collection of restaurants, some of which are quite good and some of which are eatable. I have been to all of them at one point or another and tend to go back to the same ones again and again. That probably says as much about me as it does about the restaurants. Anyway here are my recommendations.
Trapper's Grill - I decided to start with Trapper's Grill because it is probably the largest and most visible eatery in Hermann. Their menu is pretty good. It has your basic fare like salad and steak, as well as some unique items like a Quiche of the Day and Sauerbraten. The last time I was there I had the Sauerbraten and really enjoyed it. I don't typically like Sauerkraut, but their's was very good and not vinegary.
Cottage Restaurant and Gallery - My favorite restaurant in Hermann, but not always in my budget. Fantastic food created by hand with fresh ingredient. You never know what will be on the menu since it changes depending on season and vegetable availability. Additionally, they periodically offer international dinners for a little more variety. I HIGHLY recommend Cottage Restaurant, but be prepared to spend $50+ for two people.
El Ranchito - The best (and only) Mexican restaurant in Hermann. Decent food, with standard selection. If you are a fan of traditional Mexican you will not me overly impressed, but if you want a Fajitas and Margareta, you'll be happy.
Rivertown Restaurant - Fried and comfort food abound. This is a good place for an inexpensive meal of meat and potatoes. Also, good stop for a lunch sandwich.
Vintage Restaurant - Located at Stone Hill Winery, this is probably the favorite of tourists. It is a great setting and offers some fine foods mixed with good wine. Since you are in Hermann try some of there German dishes like schnitzel and sausage. They occasionally offer special theme dinners, so check there website for updates.
Wings - A - Blazen - Where to go for hot wings and beer. Not high on my list of choices, but ok for bar food without the bar.
Lyndee's - Never actually been there for anything other than breakfast, but go back almost every visit for the Biscuits and Gravy. Beware, the serving is HUGE. My wife and I split one serving with eggs on the side. They advertise Fried Catfish dinners on Friday nights, which I am going to go to someday.
Simom's - Pork Chops, steaks and fried food are what you will get here. It is a decent place for a traditional Midwestern meal. Simon's is owned by the same person as The River's Edge.
River's Edge - Getting there is half the adventure! River's Edge is located in Fredricksburg, 10 - 30 miles away, depending on whether the ferry is running. If you make it there I recommend sharing the Cajun Crab Boil For Two. Before you go though check to make sure the restaurant is open and the ferry is running. As I mentioned above it is the same owner's as Simon's.
Montagues BBQ - The only BBQ place in Hermann is pretty good. The owners are transplants for TX, so they have some BBQ history with them. I tend to favor the pull pork sandwich for lunch, but I'm a simpleton.
That is sampling if my favorite places to eat in Hermann, although I just realized I have not made it to Europa yet and I really need to. I'll let you know when I make it there. Good eats and good drinks are plentiful in Hermann. If you are only there if a weekend choose wisely.
